Internet is the unique part of the business
Let’s assume you, like DK Designs, have decided to sell hand-crafted jewelry on the internet using an eBay store. As with a retail store what is the one thing you MUST have for your store to be successful? You need TRAFFIC! Without traffic you won’t get anyone to look at your products and you won’t have any sales.
So the first question you need to ask is how do I get traffic to my eBay store?
There are volumes of books written on how to get traffic to your site, so I’ll just cover some of the most important ways you may want to consider that are relatively new:
1. List your jewelry/product on a well established site that’s already drawing traffic to it. There are a lot of examples of this and D K Designs has chosen to use etsy.com.
2. Create you own site and use Google Adwords to draw traffic to your store;

3. Create your eBay store and use standard direct mail promotions and advertising to draw traffic. This is a more traditional approach and it works WELL!
These tactics require pre-planning. That’s that dreaded “P” word again. Planning will help you spend your money wisely and measure your results. I recommend you click the Site-build-it page, because there are a lot of good marketing tips you can get free by reading their site,

Product Photos Key to Success!
Regardless of which tactic you chose for your eBay business, your product photos will be a KEY determinate of your success. If you’re NOT a professional photographer you should consider retaining a pro to shoot your product photos. When you sell online they are ALL you’ve got.
If you can’t afford to hire a professional try going to iStock photos www.istockphoto.com
T
his site has very inexpensive but high quality photos of EVERYTHING. Look at your products and learn how the professionals shot them:
What color is the background?
What props do they use?
What angle do they have the products facing?
How SHARP are the images?
Try shooting your product photos, and then OBJECTIVELY compare them to the professional photos on iStock. If yours look similar than you should be OK. But if they look blurry, dark, flat, or have an unpleasing color…DON’T USE THEM!
Save your money and GET professional photos taken! It may be the ONLY thing you need to spend money on in the beginning, but it is CRITICAL that your product photos are FABULOUS. Otherwise, you’re not likely to sell anything on the internet.
Higher price means you NEED higher quality photos
Furthermore, the higher your pricing target is the better the photos need to be. If you’re selling high-end, expensive hand-crafted jewelry you may need to not only hire a photographer, but also hire a model so your product looks like a PREMIMUM product. That’s the best way to command the price you need.
