Why use this site?

The purpose of this site is to help you to start business successfully!. Many people dream of running their own business, but few actually successfully accomplish this dream. What do I need to do to get started? How much planning should I do? How do I decide if and when to launch the business?

I‘ve started and been very involved in many successful as well as unsuccessful businesses, large and small and have created this site as a how-to guide to lead you through the entire process. If you follow the processes outlined on this site, you’ll really KNOW how much money you’re going to make, and how much money you’ll need to start business.

This may sound like a ton of work, but done correctly you should be able to adequately plan your business in a month or less.

If you start business without doing some planning you will work five times harder and make much less--never a good idea.

Hate to plan?

Many people tell me PLANNING takes all the FUN out of business. My response is NOT PLANNING takes all the PROFIT out of your business. What I’ve tried to do with this start business site is strike a happy medium between no planning, a kind of seat-of-the-pants approach, and over-planning, when you over do it to the point of never starting your business. Also, if you do choose to do this minimum level of planning and you need financing, you’ll have the documentation completed in order to potentially qualify for seed money.

Getting Started

If you’ve decided to move forward, let’s begin with the basics of how to start business for yourself.

I’m going to use a real business as the case example for this site. The business is called DK Designs, a custom jewelry design business in Northern Illinois. It’s owned an operated by Deanne Komp who, until recently, designed jewelry for fun and sold it to her friends and family. Deanne has now decided to turn her hobby into a business and is beginning to develop her plan.

To start to plan her business Deanne needs to:

- Define what her business is going to be

- Decide WHY she is going into business

- Define a checklist of things that need to be done

- Create a short/simple business plan

- Decide her business structure i.e. if she will franchise, work from home, use the internet

- Determine where she will get financing and how much is needed

- Finally, create her launch plan

First step the most difficult

Using this website, you should be able to follow a step-by-step process to define and launch your own business. But the most important step of all, the one that you must do no matter what, is to simply GET STARTED!

So many people dream of being in their own business but FEAR takes over and stops them from moving forward. Don’t let that happen to you; do some planning and START. You may need to start small or part-time--maybe a small website, but starting is the most important step.
