Start Business Ideas

Trends are a great place to find new start business ideas

by Debbie Wicker

The other day I happened to overhear a conversation between two twenty-something men. The first one said:

“I really want to be start my own business but I have no ideas what I would do?”

If I’d been in the conversation I’d would recommend he look at the current trends and find a new business that suited him. When analyzing trends it’s important to look for market changing Long-Term trends, not fads or short-term spikes.

Trends that he might consider for start business ideas are:

Very high gas prices Baby boomers retiring Green, Green, Green Digital TV conversion Huge decline in the housing market Major downturn in retail sales for housing related products HD TVs are very complex and everyone wants one Google is KING of the online world and Microsoft in trying to catch up

All of these trends appear to be long term changes in the market that a new entrepreneur should be able to exploit. Most established companies don’t want to change so they ignore trends as long as possible and try to live with them rather than totally revamping their businesses to exploit them.

How can you use these trends to start a new business?

Every person is different and has different interests and skills; but let’s take a few examples and so how you can turn something very negative into something very positive for you! Something that will help you come up with you good start business ideas.

Major downturn in retail sales for housing related products

Because many furniture businesses were started during the housing boom they’ve NEVER had to operate during a protracted recession. I am aware of three beautiful retail stores that would sell to a new owner right now if they could find a buyer. Business has been so bad that they want out almost at any price.

That’s where the opportunity is; the market distress probably means they’d be willing to sell the business on a land contract including the inventory. Fresh eyes and a fresh approach could probably make money. Let’s assume you can get the inventory for 10 cents on the dollar and you then create a successful eBay store to sell it for attractive prices. You’ve just started a retail business with no money down that should be profitable if marketed correctly.

Digital TV conversion & HD TVs are very complex and everyone wants one

All TV’s have to be converted to digital by next February and few people know how to do it. There is probably a market to help people with the conversion and also help them move to HD at the same time. It could be a service business or a retail business (see above) depending on your interest.

You develop customers that view you as their go-to-guy for ANYTHING electronic! A very good business for at least the next ten years!

Very high gas prices

High gas prices mean people want to drive less. You could set up a local business that facilitates car pooling but eliminates any security issues. You could open a dealership that ONLY sells cars with gas mileage of 30 miles per gallon or greater. You could start a van pool that drives people to work for the price they want when they want to go!

These are just a few ideas trying to demonstrate that TRENDS are a new business idea waiting to happen. One man’s market problem is another man’s gold mine!
