Start Business Ideas

Trying to decide what business to go into is like trying to decide what to major in when you go to college. You have some vague ideas of what you’d like to do, but you don’t really know enough about any them to make an informed decision.

The same is true with choosing a business, because it’s difficult to know what all of your options are and you don’t really know enough about any to be sure you’ll be successful. What start business ideas do I have?

Learn how to use current trends to brainstorm your ideas

What should you do…how do you choose?

The first suggestion I’d give you is to go to the “WHY?” button (LINK) on this site to start to narrow down WHY you’d like to go into your own business. Determining WHY is a major step on the road to selecting what business to go into.

Once you know WHY you want to go into your own business then start by listing your strengths or interests:

Are you creative?
Are you a good writer?
Do you love to work with people?
Do you have an invention you’d like to market?
Have you ever done any consulting?
Are you a great mechanic?
Do you love to make crafts?
Are you a GEEK at heart?

After you’ve listed your strengths, try brainstorming what businesses you’re aware of that might capitalize on your strengths. Don’t limit it your ideas. Put down any and all of your start business ideas that come to mind regardless of their feasibility.

For example let’s say you LOVE cars and love to work on cars. Obvious start business ideas examples are:

Auto Body Shop
Used Car Lot
Oil Change Franchise
Restoring antique cars
Auto repair shop
Auto racing team
Auto parts store
Resell auto parts on the internet
New car dealership
After market customization products or service
Invent new after market products and resell them
Automobile auctions
Classic car auctions
Refurbishing Classic Cars
Storing and maintaining classic cars
Hobby shop for classic car models or HO cars
Online hobby shop for classic car models or HO cars
Online store automotive accessories
Tire store
Muffler repair franchise
Car wash and premium detailing service
Gas station

Based on one interest that you have you should be able to create a list of at least 20 start business ideas. Try doing that for two or three interests that you have. Now you have a list of sixty potential start business ideas that you could start.

How to use your start business ideas list

Once you’ve brainstormed your list wait a couple of days, let your mind consider what’s interesting to you and what’s possible. Don’t limit yourself too early. After a few days look at the list and consider each item on it:

Could I see myself doing this business?
Am I interested in doing this business?
What are the pros and cons of this business?

Narrow the list down to three to five businesses you like to consider. Then do some research about those kinds of businesses. Try using this website to create a mini-model of how you’d create the business and the obstacles you might face.

Also try to think of strategies that will allow you to transition into the business. Changing jobs and working at a business similar to what you’d like to start is always a good idea. That way you can learn from someone else’s mistakes and hope to avoid them yourself.

Next, go to the “Getting started” section of this website and GET STARTED. You can do it! If you work at it a little bit at a time you’ll be AMAZED at what you can accomplish. All businesses started as an idea that someone had and was willing to pursue. Most businesses are within your reach if you take it a step at-a-time.

Remember what Bill Murray was told to do by Richard Dreyfuss in the film “What About Bob?” You need to take “baby steps.” Sooner than you think, you’ll be in your own business.
