Steps to start your business
The steps for starting a business are more universal then you might think. It doesn’t really matter if your business is a Bed’n Breakfast in Middlebury, Vermont that you’d like to franchise or you’re planning a hair saloon in Los Angles. You probably need to go through basically the same steps.
Let’s start with the complete list of the steps to startup your business and then take each step one at a time:
1. What business do I want to be in?
2. Where would I like to locate my business?
3. Do I want to build it from scratch, buy existing or buy a franchise?
4. What does the business plan look like?
5. How much money will I need to get started?
6. How much money will I need to operate during the first three years?
7. What employees or skills will I need that I don’t have myself?
8. What marketing/sales tactics will I use to start?
9. What is my transition and launch plan for the business?
10. What is the name of my business and what organizational structure will I use?
If you answer these steps to startup questions you will be WELL on your way to starting your own business. Now let's examine each step to startup your business in detail.
Steps to startup your business
1. What business do I want to be in?
This question is dealt with in the starting section (LINK) of this website. Deciding what business you want to be in is very difficult, but can also be a lot of fun. You’re starting with a blank sheet of paper and you can put ANYTHING on it that you want.
That may sound far fetched but it really isn’t. You can start any business you want as long as you start small (SEE HOW LINK) and plan well and you are brutally honest with yourself as you operate the business.
Let’s assume you know what business you want to be in and you’ve done everything described in the first three sections of this sight. (Starting, Why, How when your finished with these sections return to Steps to startup your business) You should be ready to go to step two Steps to Startup Business 1 & 2.
Tip 1: One thing to think about is that you can go through these steps fairly quickly just to get an idea about your business and then come back much more slowly once you’re comfortable with the overall concepts.
Tip 2: If you get stuck on a particular step DON’T WORRY, simply write something/anything down and go on to the next step. You will naturally come back to where you’re stuck and improve your concept.

2. Where would I like to locate my business?
There is a lot to consider when deciding a location for your business. This is a critical step, so take your time. What does your instinct tell you? If you are planning a retail business, remember the old saying, “Location, location, location.” If you business is best served by having a kiosk at a shopping mall, the 10,000 square foot building in the industrial park is probably not a good idea.
When thinking about where you’ll locate there is a lot to consider: How much traffic do you need? Is the customer demographic you’re trying to reach upscale or the more average person? How big of a location do you need to start and can you find something suitable in the location you’re currently considering? Will you buy and franchise and are there any restrictions there?
I’m involved will a hair saloon that was on one of the busiest streets in the city. They were always complaining about how much traffic raced by their front door everyday. Naturally, once they became successful they decided to move to a MUCH quieter, out of the way location. You can guess what happened. Much of their business does not follow them to the new location and they ended up a much smaller saloon because of it.
I’m involved with two more saloons and each has interesting location problems. The first decided to build their own building as they began to out grow their current location. Unfortunately they didn’t do their homework. They purchased two different lots and BOTH had environmental issues making any building project out of the question. They survived these problems, but they are still in their original location.
The second salon was located in a very busy strip mall. The business was enjoying fantastic success, so the owner decided to expand his business and open two additional locations. He decided to locate in a very upscale area, based on the clientele he had attracted in his strip mall salon.
They built two expensive, custom-designed buildings and spend a ton of money. As you’ve probably already guessed, the two new locations did not go well and became a financial drain on the company. They had to be brutally honest and came to the conclusion that they needed a high-traffic, moderate demo to be successful.
Tip 3: Outline some initial plans for your location but BE REALISITIC and flexible. Don’t get your mind made up too early on this one and be as brutally honest with yourself as you can.
